Healthy Summer Snack – Glittery Sour Patch Grapes

This is a fabulously easy and amazingly delightful treat that I cannot get enough of.  By rolling fresh grapes in unprepared jello mix you are left with a healthy summer snack that tastes even better than candy.  Ever since I discovered this simple recipe I have had a batch ready in the fridge at all times!

This is one of those Pinterest recipes that I fell on and knew that I wanted to try asap!  Boy, am I ever  glad that I did because it has been my absolute favorite treat all summer long.  I came upon this recipe just in time for all of those summer barbeques and cook outs.  This is my new go-to summertime dish to pass because it is so easy and enjoyable.  Each time I have taken it to a get together I see people looking at it funny wondering what the heck it is, but as soon as they try it they raise they eyebrows in surprise and track down who made it to see what it is all about.

I found this Sour Patch Grape recipe at a blog called Pure Sugar in her cooking Thursday segment.  She gives great simple instructions on how to make this lovely healthy dish that tastes like sour patch kid candies (but much better in my opinion).  These are so good and so worthy of sharing that I couldn’t wait to pass this fabulous idea onto you all!  Her recipe calls for just 1 package of watermelon fusion Jello and a pound of grapes.  Because I couldn’t find that particular Jello flavor and altered it a little and loved the combination that I came up with.  I have tried a few different takes on the recipe and this is my favorite version so far.

All you will need is:

One pound of fresh green grapes

1 package on watermelon Jello unprepared

1 package of sugar free lemon Jello unprepared

Mix your two Jello flavors in a small plastic bag.  Pour a little bit at a time onto a plate.  Pull your grapes from the stems and rinse them well.  While they are still a little damp (but not dripping wet) add a few at a time to the plate of Jello mix and roll them around to coat them each.

Remove the covered grapes and add them to a bowl and repeat the process adding more Jello mix to the plate as needed to coat the entire batch of grapes. If you do this using lemon and watermelon Jello the “glitter”  will have a slight yellowish tinge.  If you stick with just watermelon Jello you will avoid the yellowing, but the taste will be a bit different.

Put your bowl of glittered grapes uncovered in the fridge.  Let them sit for at least an hour before serving.  The longer they sit the better they taste.  I prepare them when they have sat in the fridge overnight.  I have also tried them frozen and they were good, but found them to get a little messy once they thawed too much.  If you are serving them outdoors in heat I suggest keeping them on an ice bed.   Once they get warm the jello starts to melt and they aren’t quite as pretty or refreshing.

They are out of this world amazing and are the perfect summer snack, dish to pass, or even dessert!  There are so many possibilities with these to make them suit your families taste.  Although this is my favorite version I have also tried other versions that are great!

Give a few different version a try and see what you like best!  My kids love them any way I make them and I love using a sugar version of Jello to make them extra healthy!  I hope you try these and love them as much as we do.  Like I said earlier, there is now a permanent spot in the fridge for a bowl of these and I can’t seem to keep them there for long!  I think I am the worst culprit, but I don’t feel a bit guilty about indulging in this tasty candy like treat!

  2. Is there a reason you use sugar-free lemon?

    1. I originally used it because the recipe called for watermelon fusion jello and I could only find watermelon – I usuned because they wwere called sour patch grapes that they must have a bit of a sour flavor – so I added it to the watermelon. I used sugar free to cut down the sugar and calories, but I bet regular would work just fine.

  4. Could u put the jello in a Baggie and shake the grapes in it to coat them??

    1. I think they would end up clumpy and uneven if you did. My mother-in-law just puts them in a bowl and sprinkles the jello over them, and that seems to work pretty well 🙂

      1. I put them in a ziplock a little bit at a time and it coated the grapes beautifully. Much easier than the plate.

  7. This took me back to Head Start (a long time ago) when they used to serve us Kool-Aid mix and bananas. They would pour out the Kool-aid and we would dip our bananas in it! Picking up some grapes on the next trip to the store!

  8. I tried the ziplock baggie method today. I mixed the powders in a smalled sized bag like you suggested. Then I dumped all the de-stemmed grapes in a gallon ziplock sized bag. I poured a third of the powder over the grapes and shook them. Then I poured in the next third, and shook. Then the final third and shook. It seemed to have covered the grapes evenly. I have them in the fridge now to chill. From the one I tasted even not cold, it was yummy and tasted like sour patch kids lol. Except this is healthier! I also used sugar free lemon jello and tropical fusion. Thank you for this recipe! I normally hate green grapes because they are too sour for me. Not anymore! Yay!

  15. I’m wondering if this would be good if you froze them and ate it that way… I might try it to see if it works. Roll them and then freeze them… and eat them frozen. Has anyone tried this?

    1. I have tried that, and they are okay frozen, but not so good if they begin to warm back up. The jello mix gets kind of gooey and almost slimy – which I did not prefer! If you are a fan of frozen grapes, though, I bet they would be to your liking right out of the freezer.

I mixed regular watermelon jello with about a quarter of an envelope of unsweetened Kool-aide lemonade mix. It was just the right amount of sour to go with the sweet, and no artificial sweeteners.     1. Jell-o is flavored gelatin, I think you guys call it jelly. Which jelly for use is what you call jam. Lol

    1. yes! I do that often to cut out extra calories! I prefer plain sugar free lemon.

  25. I did this and my boyfriend and I loved them!!! I washed them and put them in a ziplock bag and poured the powdered jello on it and i froze them. it was okay, but I wouldn’t recommended it because the powder clumped up and got too tart. Next time I am going to roll them on a plate.

  26. Fantastic idea! Made a batch with red grapes and a mix of lemon and strawberry jello. I can’t keep my hands out of the fridge!

    Rather than a bowl we put ours on a baking sheet to set up in the fridge, I think this helped the jello crust form nice and crunchy.

  29. I’ve made this three times in the last week. 🙂 A trick to getting them more sour is to add a little citric acid powder found in the canning section at your grocery store. Yum!
