Functional Chalkboard Wall Art – A Tractor And Airplane Example

My son’s room is decorated in a transportation theme. He loves airplanes, tractors, and anything with wheels.    Adding a chalkboard wall in any kids room is a great way to keep the kids creativity flowing!  The wall adds a great focal point for the room, and is very inexpensive to make.  The best part is it provides hours of creative play for the little ones.

He has a little wall in his room that sticks out about 4ft next to his closet.  It is a hard wall because of the closet doors.  There isn’t enough room for any furniture.  It’s a bit of an awkward space, but a cute nook at the same time.  Putting the images close to the floor using chalkboard paint make for a cute little spot for the kids to practice writing, drawing, and imagining!

Here is what you need for this project!

  1. Overhead Projector
  2. Chalkboard Paint
  3. Paint Brushes
  4. Transparency paper
  5. Images you want to paint

I went on-line to find graphics that would fit the theme and printed them onto the transparency paper.  I printed the plane, clouds, and tractor all separately.  Next I put one transparency onto the projector and adjusted the size and placement on the wall until it was just right.  I traced it onto the wall with pencil, and repeated the process with the other images.  After that I got out the chalkboard paint and painted my pencil drawn images in.

Last I used a little galvanized bucket that I had and nailed it to the wall for chalk and eraser storage.

I love watching Kyle practice writing his name, draw himself and his grandpa driving the tractor, and people riding in the airplane!  The above picture is what it looks like after Olivia has a turn!  I have regular, white and colored, chalk as well as sidewalk chalk for them to use.  The sidewalk chalk seems to be easier for little hands to hold and a little harder to break!  The sky is the limit with chalkboard paint.  Anything you child loves can be turned into an awesome chalkboard and creative space!
