Do It Yourself Outdoor Movie Screen

This summer we had a family camping weekend at our house!  With 4 kids under four camping I really wanted some fun activities to keep them busy!  We created an outdoor movie theater and a car for each child to sit in and enjoy the movie under the stars!

First thing we had to do was create a screen to play our movie on.  I found and followed a great tutorial on making an outdoor movie theater, making just a couple changes. To make the screen you will need:

  1. 2 Yards of Duck cloth – I got mine at JoAnn Fabrics.  Using a 40% coupon I was able to get it for about $11.00
  2. Roll of black duct tape
  3. Rope that will reach in between your trees
  4. PVC pipe

We already had the PVC pipe at home and were able to fit the screen in between two trees in the backyard.  Using our laptop and a borrowed projector – we got a great quality picture and awesome sound (the hubby hooked up surround sound!)  After a test run we waited for the sun to set and it was time for the feature film … Yogie Bear!!  A perfect choice for family camping weekend!

If you want to make the experience even better, make it a drive-in movie theatre!

  1. This one turned out to be a great. The kids absolutely loved it! We have heard several comments on this one from friends about how fun it looked and how creative you must be to come up with the idea.

  2. I love it – we will try to build one this weekend – and I do love the way the kids got to sit in thier “cars” to watch the movies. We might experiment with one of those transmitters that will send your sound (ipod,mp3,laptop)to an FM radio station. Might work well with inexpensive radio receiver (fake mp3 players) that I saw a a store someplace for a couple bucks ….. hmmm. Thanks for the idea!
