Our family was blessed with a little boy and then two years later, a little girl. We really have the best of both worlds under one roof. In or house there are trucks, cars, sports, princesses, tea parties, and ponies. From dresses to cleats, we’ve got it all between both kid’s activities. Let’s just talk a moment about the power of a little girl. Because playing like a girl doesn’t always mean princess dresses and hair bows! Our little girl is, in my opinion, a perfect mix. She is a princess with the heart of a tom-boy. I will catch her in a princess dress having a tea party, but sitting in the sand pile covered in mud up to her eyeballs.
She loves to dance, but she also loves to play football too. We believe, no matter how small she is that we should empower her, teach her, and let her try any sport that she wants to try. Sports can have an empowering impact in the lives of girls starting at a very young age.
Never once in my own childhood was I led to believe that I couldn’t do anything, even if it was something that “only boys did”. My parents taught me the value of doing what I loved, working hard, and believing in myself. Those are the same values that we hope to instill in our little girl.
This past summer we signed my 6 year old son up for t-ball like usual. My little girl was in tow and as they began the first practice and I found her sitting with the boys, arms crossed saying – “why can’t I play?” I hadn’t even thought about it. As we noticed a few other little girls around her age (as young as 4) sitting at the practice – I realized – yeah – why not? That was the moment I realized she was small, but mighty, and that I knew she could keep up with the big boys! So we signed her up, got her glove and a team shirt, and she played the whole season with the big boys learning the fundamentals, and having a ball too. She did her best, ran her fastest, and did everything the boys could do! Her drive, determination, and tenacity allowed her to play like a girl and keep up with the big boys!
