My kids LOVE to do projects. I bet I get asked at least twice a day if we can get out the craft box. We used a package of dollar store sponges to make a super fun projects like adorable fish puppets, a Sponge Bob, bow-ties, and silly guy puppets that have been lasting fun for them!
All you need is:
- a package of colorful sponges
- Sheets of foam paper (find it any any kids craft section)
- Scissors
- Glue
- Optional: Googly eyes, buttons, and Yarn (for the funny guys) and safety pins (for the bow-ties), popsicle sticks (Sponge Bob)
I drew shapes out on the sponges and foam paper and the kids practiced their cutting! The kids used regular glue to attach, fins, eyes, mouths, and a random hat. I also had the hot glue gun out hiding on the counter. The kids (especially my 2 year old) have a hard time waiting for 2 hours for the glue to dry before playing with their creations.
The best part of these is that they are perfect little finger puppets!! Just use the scissors to put a little slit in the bottom that is big enough for a little finger to fit in. Make sure you are doing this part and that the glue gun is far from little hands.
My son wanted to make Sponge Bob, an we came up with a pretty cute puppet! Just add slits where the arms and legs go. Put a dab of glue and insert popsicle sticks in the slits. Add shoes, a tie, square pants, eyes, and you have a cute little Sponge Bob!
The silly guys were fun to create too. I added hair to one and my son had fun giving it a haircut. I did use the glue gun to attach the buttons and googly eyes so they wouldn’t fall off. I added 1/2 of a Popsicle stick underneath each of the feet of the blue guy so that he could stand up. The other silly guy has a slit in the bottom so he can be a finger puppet too.
The last sponge creation we came up with was due to the kids Yogi and Boo Boo addiction. I just took a piece of yarn and tied a knot with it in the middle of the sponge. I added a safety pin to attach it to their shirts, and we had the perfect little bow tie for dress up!
