Make A Simple Monogrammed Wall Decoration

Adding your family’s monogram is a great way to personalize your home and tailor it to your specific style.  Making one on the cheap is simple, using some pretty paper, spray paint, and a thrift store mirror.  Using a good will frame I came up with the perfect monogrammed wall decoration for our home, and you can too.

Monograms are everywhere right now in home decor.  Wreaths, plaques, decals, anything in your home can be easily personalized with your families monogram.  Last year I tried my hand at a making a customized monogram for our walls in the living room.  My plan was for the “B” for Bond to be the topper to my gallery wall in the living room.  The wall is filled with pictures and words that inspire our family.  I thought that topping all of those things with our monogram would be perfect considering it all revolves around who we are as a family.

It sits right above a favorite silly family photo on canvas, and I love how simply stated but bold it looks in the gallery wall.  This was a pretty easy project, and I was able to make it myself for just a few dollars.  I love the texture of burlap and was able to find paper in just the right colors for our home.

To create this wall monogram I headed to Goodwill to find myself an oval frame.  I found the perfect shaped frame but it was about as ugly as could be.  It was a red plastic frame with a mirror inside of it.  It had some floral details on it and was not pretty at all, but was worth the $1.50 price tag.  Sometimes you have to look past the paint and flowers to see the full potential of any piece of home decor.  When I got home I pulled the mirror out of it’s frame and immediately coated the cheap looking red plastic frame with a couple fresh layers of black spray paint. You would never know now that the frame is even plastic  – it looks great after a couple coats of paint.

While my paint was drying I worked on the monogram.   I found a thin wooden letter “B” at Hobby Lobby for a couple dollars that fit perfectly into my frame.  I also grabbed a 12 by 12 piece of scrapbook paper that had colors and a pattern that I thought would look good in our space.  To fix up the plain wooden letter I added a layer of Modge Podge, and then carefully smoothed the scrapbook paper over it.  Once it dried I  flipped the letter over so the patterned paper was faced down on a cutting board and used a sharp exacto knife to cut around the letter.  Once the paper was cut and the letter face was covered I used acrylic craft paint in brown to finish off the edges.  I used a small brush to paint the thin edges of the letter.  I love how it gave the letter a bit of a 3D effect and makes it pop against the burlap backing.

For the burlap backing I simply hot glued a super thin batting to the preexisting back of the mirror that was in the frame.  I love the natural color of burlap and the texture was the perfect backdrop for our “B”.  I cut a piece of burlap to fit onto the batting, and glued that in place as well.

Once all of the components were ready to go, I reassembled my frame and hot glued the monogram right in the center of it.  This was far less expensive and more unique than anything I could have bought from any store.  It couldn’t be more perfect for our home and I love what a little paint and pretty paper can do for thrift store finds!  This would make a great great gift for anniversaries, weddings, housewarmings, or bridal showers!  Personalize it with colors, patterns, and designs to match your own decor or your friends or family if you are giving it as a gift.
