Raising Our Kids In A Different Time

Just a quick photo to share with you today.  A little reminder to slow down and take things slow… to enjoy the things that we enjoyed as children, especially with our own kids.  In the age of driving in the fast lane and technology based communication it is nice to think about a different, simpler time .

I snapped this picture of my little girl one beautiful summer evening while we were doing barn chores.  It reminded me so much of my own childhood growing up out in the country.  It makes me unbelievably happy to see her getting dirty, having fun and doing something as simple as drinking from the garden hose!  I instantly thought of the Bucky Covington song “It Was a Different World” when I saw this picture of her.

~

We were born to mothers who smoked and drank

Our cribs were covered in lead based paint

No child proof lids, no seat belts in cars

Rode bikes with no helmets and still here we are, still here we are

We got daddy’s belt when we misbehaved

Had three TV channels you got up to change

No video games and no satellite

All we had were friends and they were outside, playin’ outside
It was a different life When we were boys and girls

Not just a different time

It was a different world
School always started the same every day

The pledge of allegiance then someone would pray

Not every kid made the team when they tried

We got disappointed and that was all right, we turned out all right

It was a different life

When we were boys and girls

Not just a different time

It was a different world
No bottled water, we drank from a garden hose

And every Sunday, all the stores were closed
It was a different life

When we were boys and girls

Not just a different time

It was a different world

~

It does my heart good that to know that even though we can’t go back to those times that we can, as parents, still show them a glimpse of it!
Have a great weekend and break out the garden hose!
