I love adding the natural texture and warm color of burlap around our home. This is the perfect time of year to add festive fall colors to burlap to create a welcoming fall wreath. Here an easy DIY wreath that starts with a dollar store wreath and some burlap fabric.
We don’t do a whole lot of decorations for thanksgiving around our home, but I was excited to add this welcoming fall wreath to our door way for this fall. This was a quick and easy wreath to make that has all the right touches to decorate for fall. A little sewing and a few hot glue sticks was all it took took create this ruffled burlap beauty.
To make this wreath you will need:
- 2 Yards of burlap fabric (about $6 – but you will have leftovers)
- 1 roll of yellow and red plaid ribbon (1 1/2 in) ($1 clearance ribbon – Walmart)
- 1 roll of Brown grosgrain ribbon (1 in) ($1 clearance ribbon – Walmart)
- Hot Glue gun and glue sticks
- A 13 in wooden decorators wreath ($ 1 Dollar Store)
- Sewing machine and thread
To start, I cut 3 strips of burlap about 10 inches wide. The length depends on the size of wreath you choose and how much ruffle you would like to add. I took each of my lengths of burlap and folded them in half and then sewed the two raw edges together, ruffling the fabric as I went. Now, Cut another strip of burlap about 5 inches wide to wrap around you wreath. While you are ruffling your burlap get your hot glue gun fired up. I just hot glued one end of the 5inch strip and started wrapping it around my decorates wreath. Just wrap and glue, wrap and glue as you go.
Once I had my wreath covered with a layer of burlap I was ready to start gluing my ruffled burlap lengths to my wreath. I first added one ruffle around the inside if my wreath by hot gluing and attaching right at the seam that I had sewed. My plan was to only add two layers of ruffles. One layer in the center, and then one behind it (glued to the back of the wreath).
I had a little helper pretending that she was a baby lion using my burlap wreath as her mane. Her tiny rawer was not very scary, but incredibly adorable. It’s always nice to have a little help on a project! I had enough ruffled burlap leftover that I decided that I would add one more ruffle to very center of the wreath and it added just what the wreath need to make it look a little more finished. Even though the starting wreath was only 13 inches and is quite small- by the time I added all of my layers it turns out to be a nice big wreath.
I made some fabric flowers using pretty plaid fall colored ribbon that I found at Walmart in their $1.00 clearance section. I just wrapped and glued the ribbon to create the flowers and glued it to a little circle of burlap that I cut out. I also cut some Leaf shaped burlap to stick in between the flowers to add a little interest. I left the burlap leaf edges raw. I like the little frayed edges sticking out between the pretty flowers flowers. I glued all of my little leaves and flowers right onto the ruffled wreath. I am so pleased with my new DIY fall wreath. I might leave it up all winter long and just add some Christmas colored flowers for this winter.
I had made the wreath with the intention of putting it out on the porch as a welcoming wreath – but I liked it so much that it took a couple of days for me to move it outside. I would say this project ended up running me about $7.00 total – not bad for a big burlap covered wreath that welcomes our friends and family in fall style.
Very pretty! Love it!
