Years ago, before I was married or even thinking about having kids, I was lucky enough to travel to Brazil with my boyfriend (now handsome hubby) to visit friends that we had met in school as foreign exchange students. It was a trip of a lifetime and I often go back in my mind, especially during the cold drab wintertime of Wisconsin. We had an amazing experience all together, and I wish nothing more than to go back again and visit our dear friends. Two kids and a funny farm of animals leave us pretty well grounded from overseas travel these days, but a girl can dream. While on our trip our friends taught us many things about the culture and the food of Brazil. We enjoyed so many new things while we were there but I most enjoyed learning this Brigadeiro recipe. It is something that I can make here years later that reminds me of our time in Brazil. The best part, for me, is that I can now share them with my children and tell them all about our exciting visit to Brazil.
My sweet friend taught me how to make these little sprinkle covered fudge balls (or truffles) while we were hanging out in an ocean front beach house….ahhhh. They are very common in Brazil at kid’s parties and festivities that involve children. Although making them in my cozy kitchen looking out on the snow covered pond is not quite the same, they are a joy to make with my kids years later!
It takes just a few simple ingredients and easy steps to make these divine little treats and everything you need is common at your local grocery store.
All you will need is:
1 can of sweetened condensed milk
1 tablespoon of butter
2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
1 package of sprinkles
Mini cupcake papers
Most commonly in Brazil they are covered with chocolate sprinkles. For Valentines day we use colorful heart shaped sprinkles!
Put the condensed milk, butter, and cocoa powder in a pan and mix them all together.
Let the mixture cook over low heat for about 12 minutes, stirring it constantly until the mixture loosens from the bottom of the pan and it is thick like cream.
Put the mixture on a greased plate and allow it to cool down completely.
Roll 1 teaspoon of mixture into small balls. Tip: Grease your hands with butter before making the small balls. Wash your hands once in a while if necessary.
Put sprinkles in a bowl and roll the balls in the sprinkles.
Place balls in small cupcake papers.
For other occasions I love to make these rolled in fun, colorful sprinkles to fit the theme!
