How To Use A Sock To Get Beautiful Curly Hair Without Heat

If you are a mom on the go with long hair you HAVE TO try this.  It will  knock your socks off and have you wrapping your hair up in them!  This is all about how to make your hair beautiful with no heat and no time.  Curl your hair in your sleep with a sock.

Yup, you heard me right.  Have you heard of this sock bun?  You really can curl your hair in your sleep with a sock.  If you have ever ran out the door in a sweat, with two different earnings in, desperately trying to throw some bobby pins in your hair in hopes that you don’t look like a mess.  You know what I am talking about Mom’s – This is for you.  In my house I get everyone else in the family ready first.  They are all looking adorable for every function  before I have even given a thought to what I am going to do to with my own hair.  Any busy mom knows exactly what I mean.  Whatever time is left is what determines your look for the day (good or bad), right?

I was on Pinterest a while back and spotted this post about the sock bun which links you to her video on YouTube. I have to admit, I was very skeptical at first. Basically they were saying that you could wrap your hair in a sock overnight and wake up with beautiful curls.  Before I started staying home with my kiddos I was a cosmetologist by trade.  I am forever trying new products and styling techniques, and love all things that have to do with hair. Now that I am a mom of two, my hair is at the bottom of the list of things to worry about.  It’s more about looking presentable than having a great style each day. This blows me away.

Why?

Because:

  • It literally takes a minute to do
  • NO heat at all – just a soft little sock in your hair
  • No product (for me anyway)
  • You can sleep in it very comfortably
  • It works Marvelously and is simple beautiful

This is the sock bun before and after of my hair. I have long hair with a cut that includes a lot of layering.  I have a natural wave to my hair and would say it curls very easily. From what I have read, this works on hard to curl hair too.  I do not have to use product for this to work in my hair.

Here are the  step by step instructions on how to make this work.

First steal a sock from your husband’s dress sock collection (that is what I did anyway). I chose a longer, thinner dress sock. Cut off the toe of the sock.

Now roll the sock into a ring.  View my video on how to roll a sock into a ring for a visual. This is now your new favorite hairstyling styling tool, I promise you!  This is all you need to make the curls in the picture above. To do this you start with dry hair.

Put your dry hair into a high ponytail. Get it as high on top of your head as you can. I flip my head over and gather the hair to put into a ponytail.  Secure the hair with a hair tie.

Now spritz just the hair in your ponytail with water.  You do not want it to be  wet.  I would call it slightly damp.  Remember you want it to dry overnight – if it is too wet it will not dry completely.  After you have tried this a few times you will know the perfect dampness for your own hair.

Now grab your rolled up sock and put your ponytail through the hole.  Pull the sock straight up to the tip of your ponytail.  When you pull the sock to the top of your ponytail – slide it back down just a bit.  With the hair that is sticking out spread it all the way around the sock evenly.   After the hair is spread around the sock it should go up and over the sock and then get tucked under the sock.   You should now have all of the ends of your hair neatly underneath the sock ring so you can begin rolling the hair onto the sock.  Start rolling the sock down so your hair is being fed through the hole, then up and around the sock.

Now simply roll all of your hair onto the sock until you reach the base of your ponytail.  Try to keep the ponytail straight up while you roll so that the hair is taught.

When you are finished rolling the hair onto the sock you have a  bun on top of your head.  I’m not going to lie I have dropped off my son at school with the bun in my hair.  There is no need to secure it with anything else.  It will stay put perfectly just the way it is.  Now go to sleep and dream about how beautiful your hair will be when you awake!  In the morning remove the bun and TA-DA!!!  You have a head full of soft pretty curls.

This is my new go-to styling technique. I have been doing this at least four times a week to my hair.   It looks great all down, in a simple ponytail, or half up.  I would do this for a fancy evening out or to curl my hair for an up-do as well.  It gives me such natural looking  perfect curls.  So simple and so beautiful. Anyone can do this.  It is nice to be able to leave the house and not feel like a mess for a change.  This look is quite different from my normal hair in a messy bun because I ran out of time to do anything with it look – and it takes the same amount of time.

If you are more of a visual person, I have put together a short video to help show the process.

  1. I love this! Your hair looks gorgeous! Almost makes me want to grow out my hair…but I’m not sure if it would work on my ridiculously fine hair. I love how it looks on you though.

    1. My cousin and I tried this the other day…And it worked! W The bun itself is actually super cute. (We were joking around and called it the “TRON” bun, if anyone has ever seen that movie before) It was very easy and took a minute to do. It curled her hair really well, but mine not as much. I didn’t wet mine so that could have made a difference though. I highly recommend this if you haven’t tried this…
      I StumbledUpon this<3

    2. Another good thing about this way of getting curls is no heat is used on your hair. Heat is a real stressor for hair.

  2. That looks awesome, Kimmy!
I’ll definitely try this, especially since I won’t have much time to spend on myself soon… 😉

  3. Wow Kim, what a fun idea! I am going to give it a try tonight and if it works for my super straight difficult to hold a curl hair you will officially be a miracle worker if it works as far as I am concerned. With twins on the way and a 6 year old and a full time job taking care of other peoples children I just don’t have the time or energy to make myself presentable each day… I usually have to make a choice, hair or make-up… perhaps I can look great everyday now??!?! I hope so 🙂 Thanks for your post!

    1. Hope it works for you as well as it does for me – sounds like you will certainly be needing all the help you can get saving time in the near future! I am unbelievably happy to hear that you are expecting twins!! Congrats to you and your husband!

    2. I hear ya! I have a 4 year old, a just now 2 year old, and 3 month old twins. My hair is a crazy mess 90% of the time. I cut it a little shorter just to make it easier to deal with when the twins were born but this makes me wish it was longer! I will be growing it out now!

  4. I have a couple of questions: How do you get the sock into that perfect puffy ring? Also, I’m a little confused about the rolling your hair through it portion. My hair is only shoulder length, would this still work?

    1. Regina,
I would say if your hair is shoulder length that you might get some curl at the bottom but it probably isn’t long enough to get the ringlets – there just wouldn’t be enough hair to wrap it enough times. I used a “knee high” lightweight sock. If the sock is too small there will not be enough fabric to make it nice and full. Make sure when you roll the sock into a ring to start from the toe end and roll up to the knee high end. When you pull the sock to the top of your ponytail – slide it back down just a bit. Now the hair that is sticking out gets spread around the circle – over the top of the sock – and then tucked under the sock – then you can start rolling it down. Hope that helps!

      1. Thanks! I was worried that my hair might not be long enough, but I might give it a try anyway! 🙂

        1. maybe if you used a smaller sock it might work? dunno, just a theory.

    2. My hair is long, but I have a lot of short layers. I’m thinking just regular knee high hose and putting them four or five places around my head. My only problem is I know when I put my hair in a ponytail holder, it leaves a mark even if my hair is dry when I put it in. I have baby fine hair though.’

      1. My hair is the same way, as far as the pony tail holder goes. I’ve noticed, though, that my pony tail line always blends right in to my curls; you can’t even tell it’s there. I think it will be fine!

  5. This sounds brilliant! Can’t wait to try it but after you cut off the toe of the sock, how exactly do you roll it? I’m having trouble understanding. Do you sew the two ends together, turn it inside out, or what? Thank you for informing us!

    1. Roll the sock starting at the toe end. Fold the open toe end down once and then roll all the way to the knee end of the sock and you should have a ring. No sewing required!

  6. I absolutely cannot wait to try this! My hair is getting long and I’ve been getting lazy and I’m sick of the messy bun…and I’m sure my boss and coworkers are, too! My hair is thick but fine and has a bit of a wave to it anyway–so I hope this works!

    1. This should work great for your hair type! Your coworkers will never be jealous of your new look :)!

  7. I’m so trying this! I have wast length hair, that is wavy but not as curly as I’d like it to be, I have use reg curlers before but this looks so much easier and faster!

  8. I am trying this right now! It was a little difficult getting it started but once you get started it rolls right up. I have hair that down past the middle of my back…guess we will see how it turns out in the morning!

    1. Heyy! I was just wondering how this worked for you! I have almost waist length hair, and I was just wanting to know if it actually works for long hair!

  9. I wish I could see the front to see what it looks like.

    1. I am going to work on getting a video tutorial up so you can see it from all directions 🙂

      1. I would LOVE to see a video!

  10. i have tried this but my hair has a lot of layers and i have a really hard time getting it started… i think because it’s all different lengths? does that happen to you too?

    1. It is a bit difficult to roll layers onto the sock perfectly but I just maneuver them as I roll the best that I can. Pull the sock down a little farther when you begin and try to tuck more hair underneath – the hardest part is making sure it is nicely tucked in so that you get curls and not a mess. I would suggest trying it on “day old” dry hair and it might be easier to work with. Keep trying – it gets easier as you do it more.

    2. that happened to me too but i started with about 2-3 inches sticking out and i tucked it in like normal and then just had to keep tucking it in but in the end it worked… that probably didnt make since but if it did im glad!

  11. I recently tried this “curls with a sock bun thing.” Although, my hair didn’t turn out as beautiful as yours. My hair is about half way down my back and is cut in several different lengths of layers throughout the bottom. While rolling my hair in the bun I found it difficult to keep all the layers tucked inside and rolled correctly. So the end result was frizzy “big” hair not pretty curls. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Keep trying – it gets easier as you do it more. You can also use a really light serum after it is curled to smooth the curls a bit. I LOVE Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny Serum (but beware you need just a tiny tiny amount. Just add a drop to the palm of your hand and rub your hands together then run your fingers through the curls that are “frizzy” and it should help smooth things out! Hope that helps – good luck!

      1. I add another post on the sock bun – maybe some of the info will be helpful to you!

  12. Can you do a video tutorial? I am having a hard time understanding how this is supposed to work

    1. I will absolutely work on getting a video tutorial up!

  13. I tried it and must have done something wrong. Not a whole lot of curl. Of course, I have fine straight hair so maybe that has something to do with it? And I had a hard time rolling the sock down all pretty. I couldn’t get it evenly distributed like yours looks like!

    1. Tiffany,
You could try adding a light mouse to your hair after a shower and letting your hair air dry. I would say give it a try again with the aid of some styling product – it gets easier to roll nicely the more you try it! Don’t be afraid to unroll it and try again right away if it isn’t smooth.

  14. I love it! I’m going to try this before I gut my hair off! I was THIS close to doing it next week. Thank you!

  15. Can you post a video of the rolling of sock & hair? I gotta be honest, I’m more of a visual learner, and I’m not able to glean from the pictures exactly what to do. Your hair looks AMAZING after this, and I’m dying to try it! Thanks! (Came over from Pinterest!)

    1. Tara – I will work on getting a video tutorial up soon!

  16. Hi! Is your hair or (anyone elses hair who tried this), layered? Mine is layered and I am having trouble getting the ends to tuck under the sock. Any tips or tricks? Also, does this cause you to have headaches at night? If I wear buns or anything in my hair at night I usually wake up with a headache.

    1. My hair is layered from about my ears down. It is a bit tricky to roll and keep the layers rolled nicely. I basically smooth the hair around the sock, tuck and roll once. Then I smooth tuck any loose hairs and roll again and repeat until I get to the bottom. It shouldn’t be so tight that you get a headache – I have never had a problem. Hope that helps!

  17. You can purchase a premade roll at beauty supply stores that carry hair products. Fairly cheap also.

  18. Do you think it would work if you did it in two different sock buns? one on top & one down in the back! My hair is VERY thick, I have layers & my hair is just a little passed my shoulders so I wondered if the bottom hair would get more curl because it doesn’t really go up to the top of my hair in a pony or do you think the reason it works so well is because it is so high up in the pony? if it doesn’t work what’s the worst that could happen? I wake up with bad hair and have to wash it? I normally have to do that anyways. Think I will try it and see ..haha!

    1. That is a great Idea. It’s worth a shot. I would put one high up on your head and then one directly beneath that. I think it would work marvelously and your right the worst that could happen is that you our out a pair of socks 🙂 I would love to hear if it worked for you after you give it a try!

  19. WOW! This really looks cool. I have hair that is fine but a lot of it and not easy to hold a curl so I am going to try using product with my hair the first time. If it works for my hard to curl hair it will work on anybodies hair! I Love the Curls just hate the process of getting them and then they just fall out! So hopefully you have the answer to my problem!! :). BTW this is my first time to this site as a co-worker told me about it but has not yet invited me. So I found you on the first page. 🙂 Thank You, Becky Shuta

    1. My hair is the same way, fine but tons of it and doesnt want to hold a curl! And same here, this is my first time on Pinterest and this was my first page too! I have the sock bun in my hair now so I will have to let you know how it works out!!

  20. Hair is up in a sock bun right now and heading to bed! what a great idea! I am a new mom and need every minute I can get. Even if this doesn’t turn out too great I am definitely using this as an up do some time : ) Thanks for sharing your creativity!

  21. My hair is very thick and down a little past my pants line. It never has held a curl, though I’m dying to try this. Do you think that it would still work in my hair? If so, do you have any suggestions on making it easier to roll? My arms aren’t quite long enough to reach the end of my hair above my head.

    1. You might try some product in your hair after a shower and letting it air dry. This may give you a little extra hold. I haven’t tried this because I don’t have enough hair, but I’m thinking you could roll it into two different socks. Roll one way up on top of your head, and then roll another one directly underneath it. That might make it a little easier to manage.

  22. This is awesome! How do you do it so that there won’t be a crease from the ponytail holder?

    1. The picture above is with a regular pony tail holder and because the hair is dry it doesn’t leave much of a mark. I do, however, understand that everyone’s hair is different that it may leave dents in finer hair. I would use a “scrunchie” type hair tie or you could even use a cloth headband and wrap it around a few times to prevent a crease. I am going to try wrapping the ponytail with a small section of hair and securing it with a bobby pin to see if that works – I think it will.

      1. I had a dent the first night I tried it as well. The next night I used a rubber band to hold the pony tail while I rolled my hair in the sock, then right before I got the roll to the base I carefully cut the rubber band out. It doesn’t feel quite as secure as using a pony tail holder, but I don’t get the dent. Thanks for the trick Kim!

        1. i used a stretchy cloth headband type thing instead of a pony tail holder and it was thicker but no dent!

    2. I always get a crease, too. The best luck I’ve had is to just leave off the ponytail holder altogether, but it makes it harder to get a tight sock bun.

      1. I would use a “scrunchie” type hair tie or you could even use a cloth headband and wrap it around a few times to prevent a crease. I am going to try wrapping the ponytail with a small section of hair and securing it with a bobby pin to see if that works – I think it will.

  23. So, when you are rolling it, is it like when we used to roll down our knee socks from our knee to our ankle and it was this perfect little ring? My hair is shoulder length, but I have lots of hair, so I was thinking of trying multiple smaller socks?

    1. Exactly! I think multiple socks would work great. One high on your head, and then one or two directly underneath. I think that would still give you a consistent look to your curls. Let me know how it works!

  24. OMG! That looks amazing!!! I can not WAIT to try this!

  25. Does the rubberband used for the pony tail leave a “dent” in your hair when you unroll the bun and take the tie out?

  26. Trying this tonight! Can’t wait to see the results 🙂 It looks great on you – really shows off your highlights!

    1. Thank you! Hope you love this trick 🙂

  27. I just happened to have a sock on my floor, from folding laundry, when I took a break to Pinterest. Saw this before but thought I’d try it now. We’ll see how it works in the morning! Can’t wait!!

  28. I was wondering if there is any trick to taking the sock out? I have tried other no heat curling techniques, and I ended up having to cut the band out. Is it easier with the sock?

    1. Do you have a ton of hair? If so try more than one sock. One on top of your head and one directly underneath. The sock can be any thickness that you like depending on the length of sock you choose. I feel like if the sock ring is thick enough your hair should not be able to get tangled up in it. It should be easier for you! Hope that helps.

  29. Great tutorial. This is actually how the women Marines do their perfect buns… I always wondered how they got it so perfect… I will definitely use this technique for the curls.

    1. I had no idea that is how they got their hair so perfect – very cool!

  30. Kim, I just discovered the sock bun method and tried it this past weekend. I use hot curlers in my hair after washing and blow drying it. So the first night I tried this, I was only interested in retaining the curls I had through the night. I didn’t spritz the pony but just rolled it around the sock as I rolled the sock to my head. Next morning, gorgeous curls! And it even worked a second night! Now it’s time to wash my hair again and this time, I’ll do the spritz. This sock bun method to “Disney Hair” curls is unbelievably easy!

    1. That is a great idea! A great way to make curls last! I love it. Thanks for sharing – i will try that myself.

  31. I am trying this right now and had my husband roll it for me I am so excited to see if this works 🙂

    1. What a nice hubby!

  32. tried this last night. My hair got frizzy, and the curls are kinky. It was NOT cute! 🙁

    1. Sorry to hear that it didn’t work for you. I can’t say why I think it didn’t work because I don’t know what your hair is like (everyone’s hair reacts so differently), but I hope you will give it another go! Perhaps you need a longer sock, or a different level of dampness to your hair when you start to avoid the kinky curls.

  33. I tried this last night, worked pretty good. need to grow my hair out some more plus we had some west texas wind today. But another tip. With the extra sock, I cut the band off to use as my pony tail holder. It’s soft and doesn’t leave the dent that some were worried about. Then I used the toe part, cut about 6 inches and used that to cover my bun so my hair wouldn’t fall out! Worked like a charm! My bun cover was still in place this morning!

  34. I will be trying this ASAP! I have hair that is fine but quirky ie. some curly parts, some wavy parts, and some straight! I usually end up having to use a curling iron to get it to look decent but most days I have about 5 minutes to get ready and I just can’t get to it. I love this idea and look and can’t wait to try what looks like a huge time-saver!

    Thank you!

  35. does this still work for extremely layered hair but that’s still long?

  36. Amazing! Did you ever think you would become the “Sock Hair Bun Lady”? LOL! I can’t get the link to work about how to roll the sock into a roll. I looked through the comments and saw where you explained it a little, but I still am not clear how to make the sock roll. Thanks so much. My daughters will LOVE this! Lisa~

    1. Oh my – I had no idea that this would be such a popular post! I really hope that it helps a lot of ladies. I did a little tweaking to the video and it should be up and running without any issues! Hope you will check it out again! Sorry for the inconvenience!

  37. Simply Gorgeous!!!!!

  38. When I was a little girl, many moons ago, these ‘rolls’ were very common. My mother would put my hair up in one when a special occasion came around. But neither she nor I have ever been able to control my curly, frizzy hair. She would take the roll out in the evening and invariably would shriek “you’ve got Medusa curls!” The roller bun would multiply my curls tenfold!! Nowadays I don’t use the roller, but I do roll my hair in ‘rag’ curls (strips cut from a cotton sock). It’s better for my hair than to use heat sources to curl. Your idea is a great one because it uses a recycled product.

  39. My daughter is in ROTC and the girls with long hair use the sock bun to keep their hair up and sleek as required by regulations.

  40. thank you for showing how to do this! Super simple and I tried this on my slippery straight hair this morning (I sped up the process with my blow dryer, I just couldn’t wait until tonight!). And it looks great! I plan to do it again tonight and add a bit of mouse to my hair to help hold the curls for longer and smoother. I share a pic of my ‘do on my blog and added your link there. Let me know if that is not ok! thanks

    1. Awww – I am so glad you that it worked for you! Thank you for sharing my link along with your photo! Appreciate that for sure!

  41. The only problem I see with this is I always have a dent in my hair from hair ties..especially if I’m going to spray my hair to make it damp. I’d have a straight line right above all my curls!

    1. I would use a “scrunchie” type hair tie or try wrapping the ponytail with a small section of hair and securing it with a bobby pin to see if that works – I think it will.

  42. This kind of sucked. I have long, layered hair, but it made a nasty crimp line where the ponytail started. Even used a loose scrunchie, dry hair. Doesn’t look natural. Totally disappointed. I guess different hair types can’t have fun with socks. 😉

    1. sorry to hear that it didn’t work out for you 🙁 A few other readers suggested that you cut the hair tie out carefully after the bun is in place or try wrapping the pony tail with a small section of your hair instead of a hair tie and bobby pinning it. If all else fails you could run a straightener through the top of your hair and still have the curls. Just thoughts! Glad to hear you gave it a try though.

  43. I saw this on Pinterest and tried it last night. I did it on day old hair that had been straitened. My hair is mid back, but kind of fine).
I got the hair tucked into the bun pretty well after a couple of tries. I found it easier to not look in the mirror while doing it, and not worrying about if it is perfect. The end result of the bun was pretty poofy, not super tight.
In the morning, I took it out and it looked great, but a lot different then yours. I had a TON of body, which was nice, and some nice big curls, but not a ton of them. The curls ended up being mostly around my face. It looked really good!
Unfortunatley, it isn’t holding up very well today, but I know that is because my hair was day old, and super sleek when I put it up. Next time I will wash it and let it air dry most of the way then put it up damp. Also, it is a very damp hay here…so that doesn’t help either.
My co-workers did compliment it though, so even though I didn’t get the curls I wanted…it still looked pretty!

Thanks! I think this is going to be a go-to style with a little more practice!

  44. I was just checking out the rest of your blog, and saw that you are from Wisconsin. Me too! Will definitely be checking back! And – I TOTALLY had to bundle up my “Princess” for trick or treating too. Luckily we had a “lady” coat for her to wear over her dress!

  45. I had to do this every day for 2 months while in Basic training for the Air Force, and then for quite a while after that, about a year until I got bored of it. It definitely didn’t curl my hair that way 🙁 It put a weird crimp towards the ends. Maybe I’ll try it again, this way is slightly different than the way we did it in the AF, but same concept. Hair, sock, wrap hair around sock. I’d love to have beautiful curls like this, my hair is just messy wavy. I love your blog btw!

  46. Oh my goodness! I love this! I tried it immediately when I saw this. I have natural curly hair but mostly frizzes if dont mouse it and this the curls were just PERFECT! Thank you for sharing.

  47. This is awesome!

I would love for you to share it at my link party! I hope to see you there.

  48. Can’t wait to try this – my hair is a tad frizzy but straight, and almost to my rear. Also – BABY THIN. So it is pretty hard to get any volume in it without looking like 1995. No hubby home tonight so I think I will accidentally rip a hole in one of his socks and lose the other one. 😉

  49. Hi Kim! So I stumbled across your sock bun tutorial on Pinterest and decided, what the heck? Sounds crazy, but it just might work.

Well, it totally worked! The sock bun is now my new favorite hair styling method. I posted about it on my blog and encouraged other frazzled mamas to give it a try.

Thanks for the well-written and easy-to-follow instructions!

    ~Megan

  50. Tried this last night. My hair is just past my shoulders and there is a TON of it!! I’m sad to say, it didn’t work and I have the worst case of “tender head” that I’ve had – my head is extremely tender all over! Also, I woke up in the middle of the night due to head pain (not a head ache) from the bune. I do want to say I liked the look of the bun, but I just don’t think I would be able to tolerate wearing it all day, or all night again for that matter.

  51. Oh the evil sock bun! I was in the Marines, and they taught us how to make a sock bun in boot camp, I wore one in my hair for about 5 years (sometimes I would french braid instead of course)…I always had a bit of a funny bump where the hair band was when I took the bun out. Of course, the Marines are not fans of flyaways, so my hair was always loaded with gross gel and hairspray too. One of the things I do not miss about the military!

    1. I bet you have no desire to wear the sock bun these days! Thanks for your service in the military – you are a stronger woman than I!

  52. This is a great technique but what I don’t like about it is you can only do it overnight. Is there anyway you could do it during the day? Maybe keep your bun in throughout the whole day or (gasp!) use a hairdryer on the bun?

    1. Oh my gosh – you can absolutely do that! I think the bun looks super cute by itself – I sometimes where it during the day with a ribbon or something around it and then let my hair down for the evening – whatever works for )you! I do wear it a little lower on my head if I am going to sport the bun as a style. I also have one of those dryers that you sit under – 20 minutes under the dryer usually works 😉

  53. What kind of hair tie did you use? I tried it and it left a big bump in my hair. Did I wrap it to Tight? HELP ME 🙂

    1. Hi Alissa – For me, I have found that using another small piece of sock works great. For instance the part of the sock that you cut off to create the sock ring (cut the toe part of off that) and use it as your hair tie. I have also used a small section of my hair to wrap around the ponytail and pinned it with bobby pins. This method is not nearly as secure, but lessens the “bump”.

  54. Wow, I’ve never Heard of anything like this. It should be perfect for me

  55. I was just looking for easy techniques to curl my hair and this seems to be perfect. Thanks 🙂

  56. I’m a bit confused about the 5th step. Could you maybe word it to me a little better.? It’s the one about putting the sock through your ponytail. Thanks.

Here is a video demonstrating that step if you would like a visual! Hope it helps 🙂

  57. Your hair idea is GENIUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! It worked on my lil girls and myself.Which is a combo of short hair for me and layered for her.By the way your hair is beautiful

  58. I stumbled upon this and it is so brilliant! Thanks to your article, now I have people telling me how great my soft curls are. 🙂 I will always use this technique, especially now that my semester has started. Thanks a bunch! 🙂

  59. I have my (long-down-to-my-butt-very-curly) hair up in the sock bun for the first time! it will almost be like christmas when I wake up in the morning! *crosses fingers* hope for great curls!

  60. I was VERY happy when I came across this on pinterest. I was in doubt, I admit, but read through your blog. I am a mom of 2 young boys, and don’t have time to do my hair. I love this for several reasons:
    A. Very little preparation time. AND you don’t have to actually curl your hair, you can just go to bed and it will be gorgeous when you take it out!
    B. No using heat to curl the hair!! I love this idea, I am growing my hair out long and I am trying my best to not damage it.
    C. The bun is adorable if you just leave the sock in!!
I loved how my hair looked this morning. My husband said it looked very nice and I posted this link on facebook and had several people ask about it. I even sent them this link! LOVE LOVE LOVE!

  61. Will this work with blown dry hair? i hope so! trying it tonight! great idea!!

  62. I have a bun on my head as we speak! Very excited for the morning! Thanks for this helpful article!

  63. I’ve tried this many times and it never works for me..maybe you could post a video of you rolling it so i can see if im doing it right?

  64. I tried this once and it didn’t work. I made the bun right but when I took it off, the results where not as planned… maybe my hair was too dry?

  65. I have 5 kids. boys: 11, 9, 6, & 4 & a 2yr old daughter. My hair is naturally wavy but its not the type of wave to be proud of! lol. I’m trying this out tonight for Thanksgiving tomorrow. Wish me luck!

  66. Awhh!! Love this!! I have some advice for first-timers though.. The first few times i did it my bun was always frizzy and a mess because my arms would start to hurt while i was trying to roll it and i’d get frustrated.. what i found was if i layed with my shoulders on the bed and my head hanging off the side I could take my time and roll it nicely without my arms hurting.. now that i can roll it nicely and quickly, i can do it real quick in front of the mirror etc.

  67. Okay, I LOVE the sock bun. I’ve done it the past 2 nights and it does look awesome when I wake up.
My problem is that the curl falls out after about an hour.
Do you think spritzing with hairspray after spraying the water would help?
    Any suggestions?
    thanks 🙂

  68. THIS IS AMAZING!
I was a bit skeptical at first, but now I’m a believer!
I’ve done it everyday this week! Saves me a TON of time in the morning, which means more sleep — which is always a good thing.

    Thanks so much! It’s brilliant!

  69. I put mine up right now (: I had no socks so i used part of some tights..lets see how this workss

  70. this is seriously genius! cant wait to try it on my hair tonight! thanks for the tutorial! 🙂

  71. I tried this last night, and I was so surprised by the results this morning. My hair looked better than I could’ve made it look with a curling iron. This is so simple, and I will be doing it all the time now 😀 Love this 😀

  72. Wow! what an amazing idea, cant wait to get home to try it! Your hair looks gorgous

  73. I tried it for like a half hour.. my hair i think is just too layered:(

  74. Tried it last night and it worked! My hair is long, with layers, so I had trouble rolling the sock down and tucking all the ends under as I went. First try was a fail, so I unrolled the sock and pulled my hair through it, then started rolling into the ‘donut’. It was much easier to get the ends of my hair tucked under since it wasn’t falling out in every direction. I rolled it all the way to my scalp and it held securely all night. I did not make a ponytail first because I didn’t want to have the tell-tale ‘crimp’ the elastic makes. I used a long sock. The curls were beautiful!!!

  75. Thank you for making the directions (both written and by video) simple and clear to follow. They are by far the best I have found on how to do this. The directions are so good that I just had to share your website with all the mom’s on my facebook page!

  76. I tried it last night, I had some trouble at first making the bun, but I ended up getting it. As for when I took the bun out today, I only had a big rat’s nest in my hair. Didn’t work for me.

  77. OMG, I can’t wait to try this, it looks awesome!
